DepEd Announces Major Revamp of K-12 Curriculum to Enhance Graduate Readiness

  • by

In an effort to mold more job-ready and responsible graduates, the Department of Education (DepEd) is gearing up to review and enhance the K to 12 curriculum, as announced by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Monday.

During her presentation of the Basic Education Report (BER) 2023, the Vice President unveiled this initiative as a focal point of DepEd’s “MATATAG” education roadmap. “Our goal is to fine-tune the curriculum in a way that it not only equips students with the necessary skills to excel in their desired professions but also fosters discipline, patriotism, and a commitment to lifelong learning,” Duterte explained.

Key findings from a recent assessment of the K-12 program indicated a need for recalibration. The content appeared to be overcrowded; several essential learning competencies lacked or misplaced their prerequisites; and a notable proportion of the curriculum focused on elevated cognitive demands.

Furthermore, the Vice President acknowledged the need to address the broader ecosystem that supports learners. In line with this, the “MATATAG” education agenda encapsulates measures to expedite the provision of education facilities and services, nurture learner well-being, champion inclusive education, foster a conducive learning atmosphere, and bolster support for educators to refine their teaching methods.

This move comes a year after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. requested an in-depth review of the K-12 program’s execution. Additionally, Marcos had previously expressed alignment with propositions to examine the nation’s educational blueprint to mitigate the prevalent issue of job mismatch.

With these revisions in the pipeline, the Department hopes to not only produce graduates equipped for the modern workforce but also active contributors to nation-building.
