The Philippines was named “worst’ among 58 countries in an assessment for Mathematics and Science for Grade 4 students in a 2019 study released by a Netherlands-based research institution on December 8,2020.
Out of the 58 countries, the Philippines ranked last after it scored 297 in math and 249 in science while Singapore edged in both assessments with a score of 625 in math and 595 in Science. In 2003,Philippines scored 358 in math and 332 in science based on the same study.
These studies were conducted by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA)
Below is the result of the study for Mathematics and Science for Grade 4.
The country also ranked last among 79 countries in a reading comprehension, and second lowest in both mathematical and scientific literacy in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

These results are a reflection of our current state of education. Educators and policy makers need to go back to the drawing board. However, can we or should we expect much from them?
