In the Philippines, local police and education officials are currently investigating the tragic killing of a public school teacher that occurred on the school campus. The incident has prompted a reminder for Department of Education (DepEd) personnel to seek authorization when they visit school campuses on weekends or holidays.
The victim, Peejay Gonzaga Montero, was a MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) teacher at Baybay National High School in Baybay City. His lifeless body was discovered inside the school on a Sunday, near the water reservoir adjacent to his office. The discovery was made after the Baybay Emergency Response Team informed the local police.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police confirmed that a body was found in a prone position with visible signs of blood. Authorities are actively searching for the suspects involved in the killing.
The DepEd School Division Office in Baybay City expressed its condolences for Montero’s tragic death and revealed that it was a co-teacher who discovered the lifeless body and reported the incident to the authorities.
DepEd Superintendent Manuel Albaño emphasized the need for the department’s investigation to proceed without interference from unverified statements or reports. Meanwhile, DepEd Baybay issued a call to all school heads, teachers, and school personnel to secure proper authorization when accessing school campuses or offices, especially during weekends, holidays, or non-working days. Their message underscored that while dedication and passion for work are essential, the safety and security of personnel remain the top priority.
The Baybay National High School’s Supreme Student Government, representing the students, posted a photo on social media on the day of the incident, demanding justice for their beloved teacher. The student council expressed deep sadness over the loss of Sir PJ Montero and conveyed the victim’s family’s request to refrain from sharing photos of him on social media during their time of immense grief. They extended their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family, hoping that justice would be served.
