The Department of Education (DepEd)  officials eye virtual Palarong Pambansa following the suspension of the said event last year due to the pandemic.

According to Joel S. Erestain, Director IV in DepEd, they are currently looking into possibilities of holding Palarong Pambansa virtually even if it is expected to be very limited in scope.

“We’re looking at, and we’re hoping, and right now we’re planning to hold virtual Palarong Pambansa,” said Erestain during his talk on the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.

“Kaso nga lang, hindi na siya ‘yung full spectrum of the sporting events of the Palaro. But kung ano ‘yung pupwedeng ma-video, like ‘yung mga forms, ganyan,” he added.

Erestin mentioned that they have already identified selected sports that may be held online. Such plan is still subject for approval.

“Hindi pa final at hindi pa naa-approve ng Palarong Pambansa board, we’re finalizing our proposal pa,” he explained.

“Siyempre, from from the Palarong Pambansa board, iaakyat pa namin ‘yan sa IATF. Kaya hindi ko rin mabanggit (ang mga sports),” he added.

Mr. Eresetin also admitted that face-t-face Palarong Pambansa may not be happening even in 2022.

The May 2020 Palarong Pambansa which was supposed to take place in Marikina was suspended by DepEd Secretary Leonor M. Briones
