The Department of Education (DepEd) proudly introduced the restructured K to 10 curriculum on Thursday, christened the “Matatag” curriculum. The department announced that a phased implementation of this revised curriculum will commence from the School Year (SY) 2024-2025.
At the national launch event, Director Jocelyn D.R. Andaya, representing DepEd’s Bureau of Curriculum Development, emphasized the significance of the Matatag curriculum, noting its pivotal role in shaping the future of basic education in the Philippines.
The revised curriculum centers around five foundational skills: language, reading and literacy, mathematics, makabansa, and good manners and right conduct. This is a departure from the seven areas of learning offered in the existing curriculum: mother tongue, Filipino, English, Mathematics, Araling Panlipunan, Mapeh, and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao.
Director Andaya elaborated on the curriculum overhaul, stating, “By reducing the curriculum content by 70%, we are honing in on the crucial skills of literacy and numeracy, thereby alleviating overcrowding and concentrating on the most vital aspects of education.”
The Matatag curriculum will be integrated in stages:
- SY 2024 to 2025: Kinder, Grade 1, Grade 4, Grade 7
- SY 2025 to 2026: Grade 2, Grade 5, Grade 8
- SY 2026 to 2027: Grade 3, Grade 6, Grade 9
- SY 2027 to 2028: Grade 10
By the end of 2028, the Matatag curriculum will be wholly incorporated into the K to 12 program for all levels from Kindergarten to Grade 10, as highlighted by Director Andaya.
Before its launch, the new curriculum underwent extensive public review. A whopping 96 percent of the 4,843 respondents, encompassing students, teachers, school proprietors, governmental entities, private sectors, and NGOs, have given their nod of approval for the new curriculum structure.
The DepEd remains hopeful that this new curriculum will bolster the quality of Philippine education, adapting to modern requirements while preserving core Filipino values.

What happens with grade 11 and 12 and will there be a junior HS and Senior HS still?
“Matatag” curriculum is a bold move by the Department of Education in the Philippines. Its emphasis on foundational skills and character formation is commendable. However, the success of this initiative will depend on its execution, the resources provided to educators, and the involvement and buy-in of all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and students.
