DepEd Allows ‘Simple’ Christmas Decorations in Classrooms

  • by

MANILA, Philippines — In light of the arrival of the “ber months” and the unofficial start of the extended Christmas season in the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that classrooms may now feature “simple” Christmas decorations, offering some flexibility in the traditionally austere classroom environment.

During an interview with TeleRadyo Serbisyo, DepEd Undersecretary and spokesman Michael Poa stated, “We see no problem with Christmas decorations, as these are usually not permanent. Of course, they can decorate their classrooms.” Poa emphasized that the key is to keep the decorations modest, adding, “What we really don’t allow are permanent decorations on classroom walls.”

In the Philippines, the “ber months” signify the four months leading up to Christmas, with September marking the unofficial start of holiday festivities, including the display of Christmas decorations and the playing of Christmas songs.

However, it’s worth noting that DepEd Order No. 21, Series of 2023, instructs all schools to maintain “bare and devoid” classroom walls, prohibiting posters, decorations, or other posted materials. In a recent statement, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte reiterated that even visual learning aids, photos of national heroes and past presidents, as well as student artworks, should be removed.

To clarify the situation, Poa stated that teachers are still permitted to use visual aids during their classes, but these materials must be promptly removed afterward.

Furthermore, Poa emphasized that schools should avoid organizing contests for the best Christmas decorations, as it often leads to additional expenses that teachers end up shouldering. This directive aims to reduce unnecessary financial burdens on educators.
