For Filipinos, a chance to study abroad to obtain a world-class higher education is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But with the growing opportunities that globalization offers students, these dreams would more often than not manifest into reality.

More and more millennials have become attracted to the prospects of having more than just a college degree. After achieving their bachelors, they pursue higher education, and now they are more enticed to seek new learning both locally and abroad.

It’s a great thing that one of the European Union’s (EU) long-term objectives is to present mobility and higher education programs through its member states’ university offerings to deserving students outside of the EU.

Through the conduct of the European Higher Education Fair (EHEF), close to 900 students, academicians, and researches visited to the Lyceum Philippine University in General Trias, Cavite City on October 28 to explore the possibilities and advantages of obtaining post-graduate studies in EU countries.

The EHEF is organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines, together with EU Member States’ Embassies and Cultural Groups, and in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)

With this year’s theme: “Study in Europe: EUr Journey to Exellence,” the EHEF establishes its position as an outstanding center of quality and excellence in higher education.

EU Delegation to the Philippines First Counsellor Rafael de Bustamante Tello said the roadshow was brought about by the clamor of students, young professionals and researchers to bring the EHEF outside Manila.

EHEF featured more than 30 universities and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from different parts of Europe to showcase their universities to potential students.

Among the EU-based universities and higher education institutions that participated in the Lyceum-Cavite leg were the Advantage Austria and Modul University (Austria); Charles University and Masaryk University (Czech Republic); Budapest Metropolitan University (Hungary); Instituto Europeo di Design (Italy), and Campus Spain (Spain).

Embassies of the Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, as well as Campus France also joined the EHEF 2019 Roadshow.

“Obtaining an MA or Ph.D. most especially in the EU means better job and career opportunities. This year, we are once again opening the gateways of the EU through education with the 2019 European Higher Education Fair,” said Thomas Wiersing, Chargé d’affaires, of the EU Delegation to the Philippines.

The EU is marketed to be an excellent destination for academic and scientific research programs, as well as being an ideal atmosphere for scholarly activities. Most universities in the EU offer specialized and advanced study courses in Engineering, Architecture, Social Studies, Arts and Humanities, and Information Technology.

The other tangible benefits of an educational experience in the EU include learning new languages, immersing in diverse cultures, and joining an international network of students and peers.

The EU also provides scholarship schemes to foster student mobility and academic excellence such as the Erasmus+ program, which encourages students from partner countries to take higher education courses in the EU.

This year alone, 66 Filipino students have been awarded Erasmus+ scholarships that will allow them to take MA courses in various EU universities. More than 400 Filipino students have already pursued their academic dreams in several European member states and have successfully made their mark in their chosen fields.

EHEF enables students to interact directly with EU universities and HEI representatives to gain comprehensive information about their study programmes. They can also look forward to country presentations from EU member states and listen to testimonials from EU alumni and past Erasmus+ scholars.
